1.  I'm brand new to Hapkido / martial arts, is that okay?

Yes, most of our members start off brand new. We build each member at their own pace. Often it easier to teach someone brand new as they don't have the muscle memory to adapt from other styles to HapKiDo.

2. I have previous martial arts experience is that okay?

Yes absolutely! We welcome people from all arts. HapKiDo has many unique techniques and has its own take on many familiar techniques seen across many martial arts. No variation is the right or wrong way, each art has different philosophies, hence focus on different aspects such as strength, speed, surprise etc. The best one is always the one that works.

3. How often do I need to train?

Once a week is fine or as often as you can make the class. You can always practice basic movements on your own or in the mirror if you have the confidence to do so without an instructor.

4. What do I need to bring?

Beginners should wear loose comfortable clothes such as jogging bottoms and t-shirt. Something old is probably best.

5. Am I too old / young to train with you?

No, everyone is welcome, we have members of all ages and all walks of life. However, at our Bristol branch we have a minimum age of 16.

6. How does progression work?

Like many martial arts, we use a belt and grading system.  When you start you're a white belt.  In order to progress to the next belt (yellow tab) you learn a syllabus of strikes (e.g. kicks and punches) and techniques. When your coach thinks you are ready you will be assessed by a Sister club of senior Dan grades.

There are 10 belts to black and it takes a minimum 3.5 years but on average at least 5 years. Each belt is an achievement, but students should try to just enjoy the journey.

7. What are the classes like?

They are usually 2 hours long.  There is a warmup and some group exercises at the start. The class will consist of pad work, practicing non-syllabus techniques, syllabus techniques and light sparring.

8. I don't feel fit enough to do this

When newcomers join, we train with them at their own pace. This includes strength, stamina, and flexibility. However, none of these things are essential to performing Hapkido techniques.

9. Can any gender join?

Yes of course.  All genders are welcome. We have had many female blackbelts and one woman reaching the rank of master. We strive to make a fully inclusive class.

10. I have a disability can I join?

Yes of course. Please advise us of what you can and can’t do so we can make reasonable adjustments.

11. Will I get hurt?

In the history of the organisation there has not been any serious injury. We practice techniques in a controlled manner with supervision. We practice a tapping system when pain is felt by joint locks.
